Résumé

The French sports organization model is based on the assumption that the development of sports and physical activities is an objective of general interest, supported by the State, communities and the civil society as a whole, including the sports movement and companies. Throughout its history, the organization of French modern sport has yet gone through various configurations, with different stakeholders and organizations depending on the context, the situation and the issues of interest to the involved groups. Between cooperation and competition, the main sports stakeholders defend their own private or public interests in these historical and social configurations, seeking to secure a monopoly over the lawful organization of sport in France. As far as the organization of sports is concerned, France also occupies a special place in Europe, since this organization is based on a system where public organizations are prevailing. But since the 1980s, the French sports organization has evolved and the French State has been withdrawing, as a result of the development of a private sport market, of the decentralization and of the new demand of audiences moving away from competitive sport to practice “health-sport” and open-air recreational sports within cities (namely, walking and cycling in urban areas).
